Nourish taste test | Sara Lee plant-based desserts

Key Lime Pie and Blueberry Cheesecake, vegan style. Yes, they’re a thing, and no, we didn’t have any trouble recruiting taste testers for these nostalgic treats from Sara Lee!

Not that long ago, traditional cheesecake-style desserts were a rare treat for vegans, available only on the occasional restaurant dessert menu or when we could find the time to make our own. Sara Lee changed all that with the addition of a vegan Coconut Key Lime Pie to their range in 2020. Now, their vegan Blueberry Cheesecake has joined the plant-based party.

Team Nourish tucked in, and are happy to report back with our verdict on both varieties…

Blueberry Cheesecake

Cathy, Digital Editor:

“Already fans of the key lime pie, my partner and I were excited to try this newest addition to Sara Lee’s plant-based range. We allowed it to defrost in advance, then plated it up and piled on some extra fresh washed blueberries before slicing and serving for dessert after dinner with friends. The verdict was unanimous: yum! The biscuit crumb and blueberry topping layer provide just the right flavour and texture counterpoint to the cool, smooth coconut centre. A great option for a crowd-pleasing dessert or treat that proves vegans can have their cheesecake and eat it too.”

Kirsty, Partnerships Manager:

“As a busy mum of three with teenage daughters who are exploring more plant-based meal options I picked this up by chance. Delicious! the whole family loved it, even those of us who eat dairy. We had the Blueberry Cheesecake however very keen to try the Coconut Key Lime. Five stars Sara Lee!”

Laura, Brand Manager:

“Growing up I was a HUGE fan of the Sara Lee cheesecake topped with mandarins, so to find a new plant-based version with a blueberry twist all these years later is an absolute win for me. I had high expectations and I’m very pleased to report these were met, if not exceeded! The creamy coconut added an extra smooth, tropical feel when juxtaposed with the sweet, jam-like blueberry topping, and that crumbly biscuit base still ticks all the boxes. I have no doubt this one’s going to be a big hit with the plant-based and plant-curious alike!”

Coconut Key Lime Pie

Rachael, Editor:

“This Coconut Key Lime pie was fresh and light, and not too sweet – it didn’t feel naughty at all! The biscuit base held a little bit of nostalgia for me (of Sara Lee cheesecakes from long ago) and the subtle lime centre was complemented perfectly with that creamy, dreamy coconut topping. A very nice dessert indeed!”

Sarah, Editorial Coordinator:

“I absolutely love the flavour combo of sweet and tangy, and this classic pie certainly delivered! The zing from the fresh lime filling was subtle, delicious, and paired perfectly with the creamy coconut layer on top as well as the crumbly crust. It was certainly a welcome treat and is almost too good to share! You’ll want this light and dreamy dessert all to yourself.”

The Sara Lee plant-based range is available in the freezer section at Woolworths and selected independent stores.
