Exquisite plates of refined flavours, special occasions, or any excuse to glam up – whatever your pleasure, step it up a notch with these plant-based menus.

TRANSFORMER

Fitzroy, VIC
transformerfitzroy.com

Transformer table with plates and wine glass

Located in the heart of Melbourne’s plant-based hub, this elegant restaurant features high ceilings, indoor plants, and deep lighting arrangement. The menu is completely vegetarian and mostly vegan, inspired by cuisines from around the globe, with produce sourced from small-scale producers.

The ‘Feed Me’ menu will take your tastebuds on a journey in a perfectly playful celebration of plant diversity. Standouts include the truffled chickpea panisse with nutritional yeast and macadamia as well as the beer-braised red cabbage with hazelnuts, morel and chanterelle mushrooms, white onion puree, and bay oil. You can sweeten the deal with the hazelnut brownie with a red wine roasted pear, ganache, and vanilla cream for dessert. Like the menu, the wine list changes with the seasons, and is organic where possible. Opt for the paired wine tasting to take your experience to new heights, or try something from the innovative cocktail menu.

ALØFT

Hobart, TAS
aloftrestaurant.com

Sunset view of Hobart harbour, from Aloft

Prepare to take fine dining to new heights at ALØFT. The name is an old Norse take on ‘place in the sky’ and the venue speaks for itself. Located on the top floor, overlooking Hobart’s waterfront, you’ll be wined and dined in a cosy, intimate, and warm loft with one of the best views in town.

The open-plan dining room and kitchen allows guests to observe the magic behind the plates, with chefs in their element as they prepare the elegant dishes. With a trans-Asian influence, the vegan/vegetarian menu is seasonal and sourced with the highest quality in mind. Think locally foraged wood ear mushroom dumplings and kunzea gastrique or Jerusalem artichoke with macadamia, lovage, and brown butter – a highlight! You may finish with coconut, honeycomb, and fresh berries, a dessert that will refresh your palate in the best possible way. Dishes can be perfectly paired with local wines or even Japanese sake; your waiter can explain the flavour combinations as you sit back and enjoy. The menu boasts both art and passion, a fitting way to dine when in Tassie.

WILDFLOWER

Perth, WA
wildflowerperth.com.au

Wildflower, Perth - chef plating up

Dine differently at the stunning rooftop location of COMO The Treasury, overlooking the city and the Swan River. Wildflower serves up a contemporary menu revolving around the six seasons of the Noongar calendar, as established by local First Nations people – with no start or end date, the passing of each season is something that is felt.

This elegant restaurant aims to tell the story of families, local growers, and the land through the meeting of food and First Nations culture. With a focus on native and foraged ingredients, each dish is created with respect to the Whadjuk Noongar people, with every element on the plate telling a story. Dishes may include barbecued courgette with river mint, eucalyptus, and pea or jarrah-roasted golden beetroot with native lime and witlof. Perhaps dessert will be strawberry gum mousse with native thyme and fermented strawberry? Only the season can tell.

Wildflower offers a plant-based alternative for each edition of their menu, available upon request. Diners can choose from a four-course or six-course tasting menu, plus there’s the option to add the sommelier’s matched wines or non-alcoholic beverages featuring native ingredients for the full experience.

YELLOW

Potts Point, NSW
yellowsydney.com.au

Yellow restaurant, Sydney - Purple Daikon + Green Apple + Wild Fennel dish

Yellow is an award-winning vegan bistro in the iconic Yellow House building in beautiful Potts Point, Sydney. Inspired by the European dining experience with a modern plant-based twist, the contemporary space pays homage to the building’s history – an art gallery in the 50s and then a collaborative artists’ movement in the 70s. The dining experience here is intimate, warm, and welcoming, with space for couples and families alike. And you don’t need to be plant-based to enjoy the experience – the ethos here lends itself to a greater appreciation of vegetables, with each dish prepared with great consideration, often presenting ingredients anew to diners.

On the seasonal menu, you’ll find dishes that draw inspiration from native plants, such as pickled and fermented heirloom carrot with harissa oil and wild fennel, or desserts like wattleseed ice cream with sugar peach and lemon myrtle. The eclectic wine list balances the familiar with the obscure and perfectly complements the approach of the menu.

D’ARRY’S VERANDAH

McLaren Vale, SA
darenberg.com.au

Darrys Verandah - Cauliflower sponge and baked cauliflower custard with raw cauliflower, preserved lemon and dukkah salad

Located near the d’Arenberg cellar door in McLaren Vale, d’Arry’s Verandah is situated among the vineyards and enjoys breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. You’ll dine in a restored 19th century homestead, enjoying a menu guided by the seasons.

Perfect for a leisurely long lunch, d’Arry’s began offering a dedicated plant-based menu in 2017 and hasn’t looked back. Select a two-course or three-course meal from the à la carte menu, or make the most of the experience by indulging in the famous eight-course degustation menu. You’ll find small but bold dishes, such as warm Wilunga orange and rosemary marinated olives and almonds or a beetroot and pomegranate tartare finished with beetroot bark, pickled Davidson plum gel, and nasturtium leaf.

The menu changes with the seasons and offers perfect wine pairings – all vegan – made from the surrounding vineyards. With plenty to see and do on site – think art exhibitions and wine blending experiences – d’Arry’s Verandah is the perfect place to enjoy a lavish day out in a picturesque natural setting.

Gather your crew

When it’s time to eat out with your people, you’re going to want to please them all. Here are our top picks for plant-based venues that will do just that.

EL PLANTA

South Brisbane, QLD
@elplantamexican

El Planta plate ft house made tostadas, cured watermelon “tuna”, ancho chilli Mayo, fried leeks, avocado, and toasted sesame seeds

Nothing says ‘good night out’ like a big Mexican feast with friends. This is why El Planta, a plant-based taqueria in South Brisbane, is the perfect place for your next meal with mates. Everything on the menu is made from scratch, including their famous made-to-order tortillas, which are then topped with a range of meaty vegetables, sauces, and salsas. Their most popular dish is the Pescado (‘fish’ tacos), made with heart of palm – not that you’ll be able to tell the difference. Since opening, they’ve made over 30,000 of these tasty delights! It’s not all about the tacos though. El Planta offers a great range of snacks, mains, and sides, including grilled corn and house-made chipotle, best washed down with a grilled pineapple or blood orange margarita.

What I love most about El Planta is that everything on the menu remains as close to its plant form as possible. Even the plant-based meats are made in-house, including specials like ‘chorizo’ and ‘pulled pork’ in adobo sauce, that will impress vegans and non-vegans alike. Dining at El Planta feels like being in the home of a friend; the venue is friendly, unfussy, and understated, scattered with photos and framed prints on the walls, and filled with large tables perfect for communal dining. While the menu changes regularly, rest assured it is always 100 percent plant-based, mostly gluten-free, and always delicious.

NO BONES

Byron Bay, NSW
@nobonesbyronbay

No Bones - corn ribs

If you are plant-based or vegan, you’re probably used to the moans and groans of your meat-eating mates when you suggest another veg-only restaurant for dinner. But if you’re in Byron Bay or heading there for a holiday, you can be sure that even the most devoted carnivores in your group will be happy at No Bones. This plant-based restaurant is nestled in the heart of Byron’s bustling vegan scene, and a night out with friends here delivers more than just what’s on the menu. The atmosphere, service, drinks and, of course, the ethos are all just as important. No Bones manages to do a sensational job of it all.

The dining experience exceeded my expectations and, from what I could tell, those of others too. I couldn’t help but listen to comments from the tables around me as plates came out: “Is this really vegan? Surely not.” But you better believe it – everything is. The ‘calamari’ is made with konjac while the ‘pâté’ is made with shiitake mushrooms, flavoured with truffle and cognac. These are a couple of the most popular items on the menu, and for good reason. My personal favourite on the night? Gnocchi with pumpkin cream, asparagus, and sage butter pine nuts. Whatever you choose, it’ll be best enjoyed with one of their mouth-watering cocktails or a glass of natural, organic, sulphate-free Aussie wine. Dessert lovers are in for a good time too, so I strongly suggest saving room. You won’t regret it.

ALIBI BAR & KITCHEN

Woolloomooloo, NSW
@alibisydney

Alibi Bar & Kitchen plated dish with menu

Alibi is a stylish restaurant and bar offering fun, fresh plant-based food, and is situated in the Ovolo Hotel on Woolloomooloo’s historic Cowper Wharf. Whether you’re after a casual or sophisticated meal, you’re in for a bright, immersive, and delicious dining experience with your crew here. You’ll be blown away by the venue’s notable design, bursts of colour, and funky furnishings. The main dining space offers both lounge and bar seating, with large communal tables perfectly suited for dining out with a crowd. For a casual bite, head to the bar where you’ll find a range of indulgent vegan dishes, including nachos (with all the trimmings), southern fried chick’n burgers, tacos, dumplings, and more.

For special occasions, be sure to try the refined tasting menu, designed in collaboration with a pioneer of plant-based cuisine, Chef Matthew Kenney. The restaurant menu offers an elevated experience that will delight your senses, featuring dishes and drinks that have been created through smoking, fermentation, and even molecular techniques. Think: raw heirloom tomato and zucchini lasagne with marinara and macadamia ricotta, sweet potato gnocchi, or strawberry shortcake with lemon verbena ice cream. The cocktails are an adventure of their own too, featuring an abundance of fruits, botanicals, and vegetables. If you have a friend that needs a little convincing when it comes to crossing over to the plant-based side for some fun, this is the place to take them.

YEAH BOY

Windsor and Geelong West, VIC
@yeahboy_au

Yeah Boy table with delicious spread of vegan dishes and drinks

If there is only one place amid Melbourne’s bustling vegan scene I can recommend for your next night out with friends, it’s Yeah Boy. With restaurants in both Geelong West and Windsor, the aim is to create diverse, tasty food with a considered menu that meets the needs of everyone. Case in point, Yeah Boy is a dream for those with dietary requirements; it’s a place where you can loudly and proudly be plant-based, coeliac, nut free, soy free, dairy free, or even onion and garlic free. While not entirely vegan, the extremely inclusive menu means that everyone can approach dining with confidence, knowing you’ll enjoy a delicious meal without compromising on flavour.

The Yeah Boy menu offers bowls, sides, and bite-sized plates designed to be shared, which you may not want to do once you get a taste of the food. Signature dishes include the Sexy Mexi bowl, with crispy, quinoa-flaked tofu, smokey chipotle corn, charred pineapple, and capsicum salsa. Then there’s the cult-favourite K’tucky Fried Cauli or the slow-grilled Eggplant Steak with chilli oil, pickled onion, and chimichurri. Whatever you have, try pairing it with a passion fruit kombucha mojito, my personal favourite from the extensive drinks list. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, abundance of plants, moody lighting, and a killer soundtrack of throwback tunes, Yeah Boy is the perfect place for mid-week catch-ups and weekend celebrations.

THE BUTCHER’S SON

Auckland, NZ
@thebutcherssonnz

The Butcher's Son vegan bao, plated

Prepare to fall into a plant-based food coma after a visit to The Butcher’s Son, located in Auckland’s Herne Bay. The Butcher’s Son centres around a passion for deliciously wholesome food that is just as tasty as its non-vegan counterpart (and a whole lot better for you and the environment too). The menu features both new and nostalgic dishes, including pad thai, bao buns, burgers, pizzas, tacos, and nachos – made completely free from animal products. If you’re feeling spicy, their famous jalapeno poppers, filled with house-made mozzarella and coated in quinoa flakes and spices, are not to be missed. Alongside the irresistible comfort food, you’ll also find a range of fresh, seasonal salads and nourishing bowls.

For those wanting to kick it up a notch, the restaurant has a bespoke collection of vegan craft beers and wines, as well as a cocktail list with all of your favourites. If (like me) you’re a fan of an amaretto sour, you’ll be pleased to hear they shake up their own version of this delicious cocktail, skipping the egg whites and using aquafaba instead – that magical liquid from a can of chickpeas. The interior is bright, spacious, and inviting, offering ample seating for groups of diners both indoors and out. This self-proclaimed ‘butcher of the future’ may well be loved by animals and feared by plants, but you can be sure it will be a crowd-pleaser among vegans and non-vegans alike.

Cafe culture

Brunch is a way of life! And that life is simply better when plant-based. Here are our some of our fave places for healthy, wholesome eats that’ll put the delish into your day.

Conscious Cravings Co

Mordialloc, VIC
@consciouscravingsco

Pyramid of vegan sandwiches on sesame sourdough at Conscious Cravings Co

Conscious Cravings Co is a plant-based cafe in the bayside suburb of Mordialloc, south of Melbourne. Founded in 2015, the cafe began as a small home business which quickly gained a strong following for their raw, vegan, gluten-free desserts and treats. Today, the more extensive cafe menu is designed with health and wellbeing in mind – everything is plant based, FODMAP friendly, and predominantly gluten-free. You won’t find any egg, dairy, garlic, or onion on the premises, and if you have an allergy, they are more than happy to cater.

Soak up the sea breeze and escape the everyday hustle in their uniquely designed space, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Better yet, if you can grab one of their popular swing chairs to enjoy your meal on, then absolutely do this! Their famous NOM-lette (a plant-based version of an omelette) is a must-try. And, for the sweet lovers, I recommend the generously loaded house-made banana bread topped with lashings of creamy almond butter and sweet pistachio dukkah. If you’re still hungry, there’s a huge range of healthy smoothies to enjoy.

Since tragically losing her daughter to suicide, the owner has been on a mission to create food that supports gut health and mental wellbeing, without causing harm to animals. The team is warm and inviting, inspiring the community to eat better and feel great. If you can’t make it to this feel-good, bustling little cafe, keep an eye out for their raw treats which are stocked all over Melbourne.

BAREFOOT EATERY

Christchurch, NZ
@barefoot_eatery

Veggie burger at Barefoot Eatery

Situated in the heart of Christchurch, Barefoot Eatery is the go-to destination for all things nutritious and delicious. Founded by the team behind the organic juice cleanse company, Greenroots Juicery, this cafe is all about providing wholesome eats made with real ingredients. You’ll find plant-based, gluten-free, and raw dishes on their inspiring and colourful menu, made with a whole lot of love.

Everything here is naked or raw, in the best kind of way. While you’ll find many raw goodies, the menu doesn’t shy away from toasted sandwiches, waffles, nourish bowls, and salads. It’s not all that often you come across a cafe that makes everything in-house, including the nut mylks, dressings, dips, traditional teas, and veggie burgers – but these guys do. They also source organic produce wherever possible. The menu is free from additives and refined sugars, so you should definitely get that cake and eat it too! In the fridges, you’ll find grab-and-go options such as their own cold-pressed Greenroots Juices, mylks, tonics, and shots, with new flavours featured daily.

BUDDHA BOWL CAFE

Newtown, NSW
@buddhabowlcafe

Brunch table at Buddha Bowl Cafe - vegan breakfast, sourdough, burrito, coffee, beetroot latte

Buddha Bowl Cafe is a plant-based, wholefood cafe located on the bustling streets of Sydney’s vegan capital, Newtown. This cafe is built on putting the planet and your health first, providing a unique offering to the vegan scene in the inner west and an ethos that sets them apart. The owner has spent years travelling around the world, tasting food from different cultures, and this is reflected in the diversity of dishes on the menu.

When you want to ‘eat the rainbow’, this is the place to do it. The nutritionally dense menu offers incredible bowl foods, like the Bedouin Bowl with falafel waffles or the Epic Vegan Brekky Bowl with all the trimmings, but there is more than bowls to enjoy here. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try a superfood beetroot latte or the blue algae smoothie? For the sweet tooths, I recommend the Banana and Coconut French Toast topped with fruit and house-made chocolate hazelnut.

Not only is Buddha Bowl Cafe completely plant-based, but they also focus on sourcing organic and fair-trade ingredients where possible, while offering generous portions at affordable prices. They are ocean-friendly certified, meaning you won’t find any plastic water bottles, straws, bags, or cutlery on site.

MOMO WHOLEFOOD

Newcastle, NSW
@momowholefood

Plant-based brunch spread at Momo

There’s some irony in that where Momo Wholefood stands today used to house a fast-food chain. Transformed into the most welcoming space, Momo’s is one of Newcastle’s best places to find a plant-based meal. The beautiful heritage building, boasting high ceilings and natural light, is the perfect, dreamy place to find a peaceful spot, soak up the sunshine, read a book or while the day away, and enjoy a nourishing meal.

Momo’s recently did away with the few remaining non-vegan menu items and now everything is 100 percent plant-based, with much of the produce sourced from local growers and producers, which influences the weekly specials. Their thoughtful menu changes season-to-season, bringing a taste of the world to your plate. It’s influenced by Tibetan and Indian flavours, reflecting the passion and lived experiences of the owners. They are well known (and loved) for their Indian tofu scramble with crispy masala potatoes, and, of course, their Tibetan handmade steamed momos (dumplings). But save room for a snack to take with you; the cabinet display is bound to tempt with its beautiful cakes, pastries, and plant-based treats, all made in-house.

WOMBAT CAFE & STORE

Dromana, VIC
@wombat_cafe

Vegan nacho bowl at Wombat Cafe

A cafe with a cause, Wombat Cafe & Store was founded out of a desire to bring kindness and compassion to all. Located in Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula, this hidden gem operates on the motto ‘vegan by stealth’, serving delicious and nourishing food that just happens to be plant-based. There’s so much to love about this cafe, including that is feels like you are at a friend’s place enjoying a home-cooked meal. Good luck picking just one item from the menu – I suggest going with a friend and trying a few!

Here, you’ll eat well from a tasty menu that offers an array of sweet and savoury options, including home-made salads, pancakes, loaded nachos topped with local cheese from The Vegan Dairy, and seasonal smoothie bowls, too. I love that each smoothie is named after the bike trails across the road, a heart-warming nod to the local community. You can also pick up food products to go or order a platter to enjoy in your own space. While you’re there, you might as well check out their ethical range of cookbooks, sustainable products, and clothing. Wombat Cafe & Store even have their own animal sanctuary, Plumfield Farm, where they care for more than 90 rescued farm animals.

GREENHOUSE CANTEEN

Gold Coast and Brisbane, QLD
@greenhouse_canteen

Greenhouse Canteen vegan crepe with fruit and toppings

One of the first plant-based establishments in the region, Greenhouse Canteen opened in 2014 and now boasts two stunning venues in Queensland. In 2020, they expanded into the US, launching a third venue in Ohio. This family owned and run business has been gluten-free and plant-based from day one, celebrating the deliciousness of whole plant foods.

Although primarily a dinner destination, they have launched a bottomless brunch that offers a three-course set menu with the option to upgrade and include bottomless mimosas or bellinis. This is entirely in line with their messaging – sometimes naughty but mostly nice. Looks like we’ve found our next birthday brunch spot! The à la carte dinner menu provides a glimpse of their food style: vegan cheese boards, raw tacos, cauliflower wings, mushroom cheeseburgers, and, my personal favourite, a kale Caesar salad with polenta croutons. So go with a crowd and enjoy it all. Oh, and what’s a meal without dessert? Finish it off with pecan pie or rocky road brownie.
